IMPORTANCE OF THE PARISH CENTER FOR THE MISSION OF QUEEN OF PEACE: A PLACE OF ENCOUNTER IS ESSENTIAL TO EVANGELIZE TODAY!

Dear Queen of Peace brothers and sisters,

The great memories of our recent pilgrimage to Rome and Italy with fellow parishioners still vividly echo in my heart. One of the key experiences of our journey was the opportunity of contemplating the different architectural styles developed by the Church through time: from the Constantinian basilicas, to the Italian Gothic, to the Baroque, to the Renaissance, to modern architecture. In each of these styles, the Church has expressed her constant Christian drive: how to bring the Good news of Christ to the people of each time of history, with their different problems, their specific struggles, their dreams and aspirations, their demographics and backgrounds. While some essential aspects remained through the changes, (beauty, transcendent Christian symbols, etc.) we can tell the Church brought Christ to the people of different ages in very different ways.

Today, we live in an age of brief internet connections, anonymous social media, superficial worldly encounters, materialism and busy schedules, when true human relationships are very rare, and people feel distant, lonely and disenchanted. In large city parishes like ours, it is easy for many to come and go without being engaged and participate in the parish at a personal level. The church, as a loving Mother of God’s beloved children, needs to respond to this situation by creating the necessary buildings which provide spaces of Christian encounter, true human relationships, and authentic love. Our parish center needs to allow for the growth of strong Christian families, permanent friendships, and a welcoming community life centered in Christ.

At this moment, many of our parishioners come to the sacraments, but do not have the appropriate spaces to meet and spend quality time with others, to make them feel welcome, and to increase their sense of belonging. Our current facilities are no longer conducive to participation in parish life at a personal level, through personal relationships and authentic engagement. A new parish center will bring us closer to each other as the family of God, which we are, being able to express our differences with the unity of the one Church of Christ.

No one better than St. John Paul II expressed the need of a new parish structure which may address our current pastoral needs. “One way of renewing parishes, especially urgent for parishes in large cities, might be to consider the parish as a community of communities and movements. It seems timely therefore to form ecclesial communities and groups of a size that allows for the human relationships. This will make it possible to live communion more intensely...In such a human context, it will be easier to gather to hear the Word of God, to reflect on the range of human problems in the light of this Word, and gradually to make responsible decisions inspired by the all-embracing love of Christ. The institution of the parish, thus renewed, can be the source of great hope. It can gather people in community, assist family life, overcome the sense of anonymity, welcome people and help them to be involved in their neighborhood and in society” (Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation ‘Ecclesia in America’, No. 41).

I invite all of us to take to heart the words of our beloved holy pope as we pray and reflect on the elements our new parish center should have to bring us closer to God and to each other.

IMPORTANCIA DE UN CENTRO PARROQUIAL PARA LA MISIÓN DE REINA DE LA PAZ: UN LUGAR DE ENCUENTRO ES ESENCIAL PARA EVANGELIZAR HOY!

Queridos hermanos y hermanas de Reina de la Paz, 

Los grandes recuerdos de nuestra peregrinación reciente a Roma e Italia con otros feligreses, aún resuena claramente en mi corazón. Una de las experiencias clave de nuestra jornada fue la posibilidad de contemplar los distintos estilos arquitectónicos desarrollados por la Iglesia a través del tiempo: desde las basílicas de Constantino, hasta el gótico italiano, al Barroco, al Renacimiento, a la arquitectura moderna. En cada uno de estos estilos, la Iglesia expresa su constante impulso Cristiano: como llevar la Buena Nueva de Cristo al pueblo de cada época de la historia, con sus diferentes problemas, sus luchas específicas, sus sueños y aspiraciones, su demografía y origen. Si bien algunos aspectos esenciales se mantuvieron a través de los cambios, (la belleza, símbolos cristianos trascendentes, etc.) podemos decir que la Iglesia llevó a Cristo a las personas de diferentes edades de maneras muy diferentes.

Hoy en día, vivimos en una época de conexiones breves de Internet, de anonimato en las redes sociales, de encuentros mundanos superficiales, de materialismo y horarios ocupados, cuando las verdaderas relaciones humanas son raras, y la gente se siente distante, solitaria y desencantada. En las grandes parroquias de la ciudad como la nuestra, es fácil para muchos ir y venir sin involucrarse ni participar en la parroquia a nivel personal. La iglesia, como una madre amorosa de hijos amados de Dios, debe  responder a esta situación mediante la creación de los edificios necesarios que proporcionan espacios de encuentro cristiano, verdaderas relaciones humanas, y amor auténtico. Nuestro centro parroquial debe permitir el crecimiento de familias cristianas, amistades permanentes, y de una acogedora vida en comunidad centrada en Cristo.

En este momento, muchos de nuestros feligreses vienen a los sacramentos, pero no tienen los espacios apropiados para reunirse y pasar tiempo juntos, para sentirse acogidos, y para sentirse que pertenecen. Nuestras instalaciones actuales ya no son conducentes para la participación en vida parroquial a nivel personal, mediante las relaciones personales y el compromiso auténtico. Un nuevo centro parroquial nos acercará como familia de Dios, la cual somos, capaces de expresar nuestras diferencias con la unidad de una sola Iglesia de Cristo.  

Nadie mejor que San Juan Pablo II expresó la necesidad de una nueva estructura, la cual hace frente a nuestras necesidades pastorales actuales. “Una clave de renovación parroquial, especialmente urgente en las parroquias de las grandes ciudades, puede encontrarse quizás considerando la parroquia como comunidad de comunidades y de movimientos. Parece por tanto oportuno la formación de comunidades y grupos eclesiales de tales dimensiones que favorezcan verdaderas relaciones humanas. Esto permitirá vivir más intensamente la comunión… En este contexto humano será también más fácil escuchar la Palabra de Dios, para reflexionar a su luz sobre los diversos problemas humanos y madurar opciones responsables inspiradas en el amor universal de Cristo. La institución parroquial así renovada, puede suscitar una gran esperanza. Puede formar a la gente en comunidades, ofrecer auxilio a la vida de familia, superar el estado de anonimato, acoger y ayudar a que las personas se inserten en la vida de sus vecinos y en la sociedad” (Exhortación Apostólica Postsinodal ‘Ecclesia en America’, No. 11). Invito a todos a tomar a pecho las palabras de nuestro querido santo papa, al rezar y reflexionar sobre los elementos que nuestro nuevo centro parroquial debe tener para llevarnos más cerca a Dios y a uno al otro.
