DISCIPLESHIP: AN ANSWER TO GOD’S PERSONAL CALL TO FOLLOW HIM 

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our mission at Queen of Peace is to form joyful disciples of Christ. "Disciple" means "follower". We are learning to follow Christ, who has called us to be his disciples in Baptism, and has appeared later in our life saying to each one of us personally: "Come, follow me!" Being a disciple requires more than just knowing our faith. To be a disciple means to answer Christ's call, not just with our words, but with our entire life. It means to leave other things like our own time, our selfish plans, our own things, or even our family in order to follow Him and do what He wants. It requires us to be stewards of God’s house and act according to His love.

Becoming a disciple of Christ is not an easy journey, and it’s not meant to be done alone, that’s why we are doing it together, as a parish family. Our path toward   Discipleship aims to help us make a personal choice for Christ, not just with words, but with our time, our many talents, and with our material goods, so that we may be his disciples in today's world. We began with Discipleship of Faith and Prayer several weeks ago, pledging to God to spend time with Him in prayer and time enriching our faith. This weekend, the readings come as an encouragement,  reminding us that prayer changes everything. In the first reading, Israel goes to into battle, and it’s by entrusting the outcome to God, through Moses’ prayer, that Israel is able to win: “As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight” (Ex 17:11). It’s the same for us in our fights against sin – against our selfishness, our pride, our judgements. When we entrust these things to God wholeheartedly, He answers. When we give Him just a portion of our time in prayer, He repays us more than a hundredfold.

It is with that same trust that we continue our path of discipleship, now focusing on treasure. As with prayer, this is for our spiritual growth, so that we may become true disciples of Christ. "Good disciples realize that they must make God the priority of their life and give Him the first and best of His gifts, not out of fear, but out of love and thanksgiving. Then they trust that God will provide for them in the same way they have given of their gifts to provide for others. Those who live this way are happy people who have found a meaningful purpose of living." (Andrew Kemberling and Mila Glodava. Making Stewardship A Way of Life.)

When we give our time, talents and money to God, we must base these gifts on the "need to give" back to God out of gratitude for all He has given to us, and our giving doesn't stop. It's ongoing and there are no strings attached to our gift. We just continue to give our best back to God because we realize His actions in our lives, that He is in control of everything that happens in our lives. Next weekend is what we call our Treasure Commitment Weekend, in which we will take that first step of giving back our gifts to God. During Mass, we will submit our pledges to Him – if you haven’t been tithing, maybe it’ll be a pledge to begin. If you have, maybe it will be to increase your offertory. Whatever you pledge is, it’s between you and God. 

I myself know the graces that come from entrusting all finances and material goods to God. I am a tither, and so is Queen of Peace. We give 10% of our offerings to charitable organizations throughout the world, and God shows us time and time again that He can be trusted. "Many shall look on in awe and they shall trust in the Lord"  (Ps 50:4). I invite you to pray brothers and sisters, for everyone in our parish, so that we may all trust in the Lord with every aspect of our lives and together, become and make disciples.

DISCIPULADO: LA RESPUESTA A LA LLAMADA PERSONAL DE JESUS A SEGUIRLO 

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,

Nuestra misión en Reina de la Paz es formar alegres discípulos de Cristo. “Discípulo” significa “seguidor”. Estamos aprendiendo a seguir a Cristo, quien nos llamó a ser sus Discípulos en el Bautismo, y quien apareció más tarde en nuestra vida diciéndonos a cada uno de nosotros personalmente: ¡“Ven, sígueme”! El ser un discípulo requiere más que el sólo conocer nuestra fe. El ser un discípulo significa responder a la llamada de Cristo, no sólo con palabras, sino con nuestra vida entera. Significa dejar otras cosas como nuestro tiempo, nuestros planes egoístas, nuestras propiascosas, incluso nuestra familia para seguirlo y hacer lo que Él quiere que hagamos. Requiere que seamos administradores de la casa de Dios y actuar der acuerdo a Su amor.

El convertirse en discípulo de Cristo no es una jornada fácil, y no es para que la hagamos solos, por eso lo estamos haciendo juntos, como familia parroquial. El propósito de nuestro camino hacia el Discipulado es ayudarnos a hacer una elección personal por Cristo, no sólo con palabras, sino con nuestro tiempo, nuestros muchos talentos, y con nuestros bienes materiales, de modo que podamos ser sus discípulos en el mundo de hoy. Comenzamos con Discipulado de fe y oración hace algunas semanas, prometiéndole a Dios para pasar más tiempo con Él en oración y más tiempo enriqueciendo nuestra fe. Este fin de semana, las lecturas nos vienen a dar ánimo, nos recuerdan que la oración lo cambia todo. En la primera lectura, Israel entra en batalla, y resulta victoriosa porque deja el resultado en las manos de Dios, a través de la oración de Moisés: “Cuando Moisés tenía las manos en alto, dominaba Israel, pero cuando las bajaba, Amalec dominaba” (Ex 17:11). Es lo mismo para nosotros en nuestras luchas contra el pecado - en contra de nuestro egoísmo, nuestro orgullo, nuestros juicios. Cuando le confiamos estas cosas a Dios de todo corazón, Él responde. Cuando le damos por lo menos una parte de nuestro tiempo en oración, Él nos devuelve más de cien veces.

Es con esa misma confianza que continuamos nuestro camino del discipulado, ahora centrado en nuestros bienes. Al igual que con la oración, esta parte es para nuestro crecimiento espiritual, para que podamos llegar a ser verdaderos discípulos de Cristo. "Los buenos discípulos se dan cuenta de que Dios debe ser la prioridad de su vida y deben darle el primer y el mejor de sus dones, no por miedo, sino por amor y agradecimiento. Entonces, confían en que Dios proveerá para ellos de la misma forma en que sus dones se han utilizado para proveer por otros. Los que viven de esta manera son personas felices que han     encontrado un propósito significativo en la vida ". (Andrew Kemberling y Mila Glodava. Making Stewardship a Way of Life.)

Cuando damos de nuestro tiempo, talentos y dinero a Dios, debemos basar estos dones en la "necesidad de dar" a Dios en agradecimiento por todo lo que Él nos ha dado, y nuestra entrega no se detiene. Es permanente y no nos sentimos obligados. Simplemente seguimos dando lo mejor de nosotros a Dios porque nos damos cuenta de sus acciones en nuestra vida, que Él está en control de todo lo que sucede en nuestras vidas. El próximo fin de semana será lo que llamamos nuestro fin de semana del Compromiso de Bienes, en el que vamos a dar el primer paso en devolver nuestros dones a Dios. Durante la misa, le vamos a presentar nuestras promesas - si no ha dado el diezmo, tal vez esta va a ser una promesa para comenzar. Si da el diezmo tal vez piense en aumentar su ofrecimiento. Lo que prometa es entre usted y Dios.

Yo mismo sé las gracias que vienen de confiar todas las finanzas y los bienes materiales a Dios. Doy el diezmo, y también lo hace Reina de la Paz. Le damos el 10% de nuestra oferta a las organizaciones benéficas en todo el mundo, y Dios nos muestra una y otra vez que se puede confiar en Él. "Muchos verán con asombro el cual confiará en el Señor" (Salmo 50:4). Los invito a rezar hermanos y hermanas, por todos nuestra parroquia, para que pongamos toda nuestra confianza en el Señor con todos los aspectos de nuestras vidas y juntos, llegar a ser y hacer discípulos.
