DISCIPLESHIP OF TREASURE COMMITMENT WEEKEND: THE BEGINNING OF A NEW RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD 

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

For the past few weeks, I have been talking about the importance of giving back to God in thanksgiving for our many blessings and trusting Him with everything, including our finances. Today, many of you are saying yes to the Lord’s call to follow Him with every aspect of your lives and are making a pledge to Him to give back to Him a portion of what He has blessed you with.

Maybe you’ve never given before or have given the cash you have in your pocket—$5 here, $10 there, without much planning; and today for the first time, you are making it a commitment to give, putting an amount in writing, and placing it at the foot of the altar; maybe you’ve been    giving consistently, but you’ve been scared to make a commitment, and today you are pledging to give a partial tithe; maybe you have been wanting something to change in your life, and have decided to take a leap of faith and are making a complete tithe for the first time; or maybe you have been tithing and are pledging to either continue doing so or to increase your giving.  

Whatever pledge you are making today, I thank you. You have realized that God has blessed you in innumerable ways and you’re making the choice to give Him thanks. Because of this choice, your relationship with God will change.  It takes trust to truly tithe to God, but He never disappoints. When you give Him even just a bit of your trust, He’ll amaze you with what He does with it. I remember when I risked and let God free me from attachment to material goods. He provided! I didn’t lackanything. He took care of me and I was happier than I have ever been. The Lord is faithful. We can trust Him. The first reading from Sirach assures us of this: “He who serves willingly is heard; his petition reaches the heavens” (Sir 35:16).

Our youth were also invited to make a pledge to God. Those who did, will begin receiving their own, special children’s collection envelopes; and at every Mass, we’ll make an altar call, asking the children to come forward to give their envelopes. All of the money collected from the children’s collection will go to the homeless youth at the Samaritan House in Denver. Parents, thank you for taking the time to help make your children generous givers. I invite you to make this a teaching moment for your children. Many times children don’t realize how blessed they are. This is an opportunity for you to guide them in seeing all the ways the Lord has blessed them, and teach them the importance of giving Him thanks for it and giving back to Him in gratitude. Your children will be giving back to God by caring for the needy in our community.

If you are not making a pledge today, I encourage you to pray. We will keep the pledge cards in the pews for a week, and next weekend, you will have another opportunity to fill one out. This week, I invite you to prayerfully think of all of the different ways the Lord has blessed you and about what’s truly keeping you from giving back to Him. You may discover something you didn’t realize before – pride, an attachment to money, lack of trust in the Lord. Ask Him, and He will answer.

The Lord knows what is in our hearts. Look at the two men in the Gospel. “One was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity -- greedy, dishonest, adulterous -- or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’ But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner’” (Lk 18:10-13).

So as we continue our path toward becoming disciples of Christ, let’s not forget the most important thing we can do: pray. The Pharisee isn’t truly praying to God. Let’s pray that we may know the truth ourselves, like the tax collector: we receive and owe everything to God. We give from our own poverty, humility, and gratitude.

COMPROMISO DE DISCIPULADO DE BIENES: EL PRINCIPIO DE UNA RELACIÓN NUEVA CON DIOS 

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,

Durante las últimas semanas, he estado hablando sobre la importancia de darle a Dios en agradecimiento por todas nuestras bendiciones y de confiar en Él en todo, incluyendo en nuestras finanzas. Hoy muchos le están diciendo "si" a la llamada del Señor a seguirlo con cada aspecto de sus vidas, haciéndole una promesa de darle una porción de lo que les ha dado.

Tal vez nunca has dado, o has dado del cambio que traes en la bolsa—un día $5, otro día $10–sin realmente planearlo, y hoy, por primera vez, estás haciendo un compromiso de dar, poniéndolo por escrito, y colocándolo al pie del altar; tal vez has estado dando consistentemente, pero has tenido miedo de hacer un compromiso, y hoy por primera vez estas prometiendo dar parte del diez por ciento; tal vez has estado buscando un cambio en tu vida, y hoy estas dando el diezmo completo por primera vez; tal vez has estado dando el diezmo y prometiste continuar a hacerlo o a aumentar lo que das.

Cualquiera que sea su promesa hoy, les doy las gracias. Se han dado cuenta que Dios los ha bendecido de maneras innumerables y han decidido darle gracias. Tras esta decisión, su relación con Dios cambiara. El darle a Dios el diezmo requiere confianza, pero Él nunca nos defrauda. Cuando ponemos por lo menos un poco de nuestra confianza en Él, Él nos asombra con lo que hace. Yo mismo recuerdo cuando arriesgue y deje que Dios me liberara del apego a los bienes materiales. ¡Dios proveyó! No me hizo falta nada. Él se encargó de mí y fui más feliz de lo que jamás haya sido. El Señor es fiel. Podemos confiar en Él. Nos lo dice la primera lectura: "Quien sirve a Dios con todo su corazón es oído y su plegaria llega hasta el cielo” (Eclesiástico 35:16).

Nuestros jóvenes también fueron invitados a   hacerle una promesa a Dios. Aquellos que lo hagan comenzarán a recibir sus propios sobres especiales para niños; y en cada Misa, haremos una llamada al altar, pidiéndoles a los niños a pasar hacia adelante a dar sus sobres. Todo el dinero recaudado de la colecta de los niños irá a los niños sin hogar de la Casa Samaritana en    Denver. Padres, gracias por tomarse el tiempo para ayudar a que sus hijos sean generosos. Los invito a que este sea un momento de aprendizaje para sus niños. Muchas veces los niños no se dan cuenta de cuantas bendiciones tienen. Esta es unaoportunidad para que los guíen en ver de cuantas maneras los ha bendecido el Señor, y de enseñarles la importancia de agradecerle y darle a Dios en gratitud. Sus niños le darán a Dios al darle a los más necesitados en nuestra comunidad.  

Si no han hecho una promesa hoy, los animo a que recen. Dejaremos las tarjetas de promesa en las bancas durante la próxima semana, y el próximo domingo, tendrán otra oportunidad de llenar una. Esta semana, los invito a que consideren en oración, todas las menaras en las que El Señor los ha bendecido y sobre que realmente les impide darle a Dios. Quizá descubran algo de lo que no se habían dado cuenta antes – orgullo, apego al dinero, falta de confianza en Dios. Pídanle, y Él res responderá.

El Señor sabe que tenemos en nuestros corazones. Miren a los dos hombres del Evangelio: "Dos hombres subieron al templo para orar: uno era fariseo y el otro, publicano. El fariseo, erguido, oraba así en su interior: 'Dios mío, te doy gracias porque no soycomo los demás hombres: ladrones, injustos y adúlteros; tampoco soy como ese publicano. Ayuno dos veces por semana y pago el diezmo de todas mis ganancias'. El publicano, en cambio, se quedó lejos y no se atrevía a levantar los ojos al cielo. Lo único que hacía era golpearse el pecho, diciendo: 'Dios mío, apiádate de mí, que soy un pecador'" (Eclesiástico 35:16).

A medida que continuamos nuestro camino para convertirnos en discípulos de Cristo, no olvidemos lo más importante que podemos hacer: rezar. En el evangelio, el fariseo en realidad no estaba rezando. Oremos para que veamos la verdad como el publicano: recibimos y le debemos todo a Dios. Damos de nuestra propia pobreza, humildad, y gratitud.
