TRUSTING GOD AND GIVING HIM THANKS GRANTS US A NEW LIFE

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am very grateful for the great response from so many parishioners to the message of discipleship as a way of life, here at Queen of Peace. Last weekend, during our Discipleship of Treasure Commitment Weekend, many of us decided to give thanks to the Lord for His many blessings in our life, and we pledged to give Him back part of His gifts to us. I was very happy and moved to hear from those of you who told me that since you began to tithe, your life is different; you are more involved in our parish, you have a deeper relationship with God and you feel more part of the Church.

Thank you for placing your trust in the Lord. We must also be thankful to Him for granting us the grace to give, because sacrificial giving is a gift itself. For regular tithers, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we’ve done it all, or judging those who don’t tithe, and feeling like we are better than them. We have to remember that if we are giving our first and best ten percent, it is because God is working in us, giving us a grace we don’t deserve. It’s a gift of gratitude He gives us freely, and which we simply accept.

If you pledged to tithe for the first time, congratulations! Your life is about to change. You are about to begin a new relationship with God, and that changes everything. We see it in our Gospel today. Zacchaeus, a tax collector, had money, possessions, security, power – everything the world says will make us happy. Yet he knew he was missing something in his life. So he risked, he climbed the sycamore tree to see who this Jesus was truly all about. He then allowed Jesus to enter his home, his life, his family, his decisions, and that encounter with Christ touched his heart and filled him with gratitude. “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.”(Lk 19:8). Zacchaeus is so grateful for Christ coming into his life, that he gives more than ten percent, he gives 50 percent of everything he has! He has discovered something much greater than money. By making a pledge, we are like Zacchaeus. We are doing something to see Jesus and allowing Him to enter into our life. Like Zacchaeus, we will see changes in our life. God will make us less attached to money and we will see His gifts in every aspect, even the smallest details, of our life. We will be more sensitive to His blessings.

If you didn’t make a pledge to give a full tithe, but decided to offer God a partial tithe or to pledge what you believe you are already giving, I thank you too. You have started to grow in fidelity with God and his Church. I encourage you to continue praying for trust and for openness to a personal relationship with Him in a new way. I especially invite everyone to pray for our brothers and sisters who don’t give back to God, because they are contradicting why God made us – to be thankful and to love and serve Him in this life and the next.

I know that some of you received your Pledge Cards in the mail after we made the altar call. If that’s the case, you can still fill it out and drop it in the collection box this weekend or next. I invite everyone to pray that we may all be faithful to God's call to follow Him with everything we are and have during this Follow-Up Discipleship of Treasure Weekend.

Let us now pray that the Lord may keep our pledges and remain faithful to our promises to Him.

La confianza y el agradecimiento a Dios nos dan vida nueva

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Estoy muy agradecido por la gran respuesta de tantos feligreses al mensaje del discipulado como manera de vida, aquí en Reina de la Paz. El fin de semana pasado, durante nuestro fin de semana de compromiso al Discipulado de Bienes, muchos de nosotros decidimos darle gracias a Dios por tantas bendiciones en nuestra vida, y prometimos regresarle a Dios, parte de los regalos que nos da. Me dio mucho gusto y me conmovió el escuchar de aquellos que me dijeron que desde quecomenzaron a dar el diezmo, su vida es diferente; están más involucrados en la parroquia, tienen una relación más profunda con Dios y se sienten más parte de la Iglesia.

Gracias por poner su confianza en Dios. También debemos estar agradecidos con Él por otorgarnos la gracia para dar, porque el dar como sacrificio es en sí un regalo. Para los que damos el diezmo regularmente, es fácil caer en la trampa de pensar que nosotros lo hemos hecho todo, o juzgar a aquellos que no dan el diezmo, y sentirnos mejor que ellos. Por eso debemos recordar que si estamos dando el primer y mejor diez por ciento, es porque Dios está trabajando en nosotros, dándonos una gracia que no merecemos. Es un regalo de gratitud que nos da libremente, y el cual simplemente aceptamos.

Si prometieron dar el diezmo por primera vez, ¡felicidades! Su vida está por cambiar. Están por iniciar una nueva relación con Dios, y eso lo cambia todo. Lo vemos en el evangelio de hoy. Zaqueo era un publicano, tenía dinero, posesiones, seguridad, poder – todo lo que el mundo dice que nos hará feliz. Sin embargo, sabía que le hacía falta algo en su vida. Así que arriesgo, se subió a un árbol para ver quien verdaderamente era Jesús. Entonces permitió que Jesús entrara en su hogar, en su vida, en su familia, en sus decisiones, y ese encuentro con Cristo tocó su corazón y lo llenó de gratitud. "Mira, Señor, voy a dar a los pobres la mitad de mis bienes, y si he defraudado a alguien, le restituiré cuatro veces más". (Lc 19:8). Zaqueo esta tan agradecido por la venida de Cristo a su vida, que da más del 10 por ciento; ¡Da el 50 por ciento de todo lo que tiene! Ha descubierto algo mucho mejor que el dinero. Al hacer una promesa, somos como Zaqueo. Estamos haciendo algo para ver a Jesús y para dejarlo entrar en nuestras vidas. Como Zaqueo, veremos cambios en nuestra vida. Dios nos hará menos apegados al dinero, y veremos sus regalos en cada aspecto, hasta el más pequeño detalle, de nuestra vida. Seremos más sensibles a sus bendiciones.

Si no hicieron una promesa de dar el diezmo completo, pero decidieron ofrecerle a Dios parte del diezmo o lo que creen que ya están dando, también les doy las gracias. Han comenzado a crecer en fidelidad con Dios y su Iglesia. Los invito a que continúen orando por confianza y para estar abiertos a una relación personal con Él de una manera nueva. Los invito especialmente a orar por nuestros hermanos y hermanas que no le dan a Dios, porque están contradiciendo el por qué Dios nos creó – para ser agradecidos con Él, amarlo, y servirle en esta vida y en la próxima.

Sé que algunos de ustedes recibieron sus Tarjetas de Promesa en el correo después de que hicimos la llamada al altar. Si ese fue el caso, aún pueden entregarla en la colecta este o el próximo fin de semana. Invito a todos a que oren para que permanezcamos fieles a la llamada de Dios a seguirlo con todo lo que somos y tenemos en este fin de semana de seguimiento de Discipulado de Bienes.

Ahora oremos para que el Señor mantenga nuestras promesas y permanezcamos fieles a nuestras promesas a Él.
