AFTER ELECTIONS, TIME FOR MORE UNITY AND MERCY: “FOR I WAS A STRANGER, AND YOU WELCOMED ME”(Mt 25:35)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

I know from my encounters with many of our brothers and sisters, that the outcome of the elections has raised many concerns and fears among our Hispanic community. Archbishop José Gomez, of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles painted a very sad, but very real image of how many of our brothers and sisters are feeling: “Right now — all across this city, and in cities all across this country — there are children who are going to bed scared. There are men and women who can’t sleep because they are trying to figure out what to do next, trying to figure out what to do when the government comes to take them away from their kids and their loved ones.”

Many of you, here at Queen of Peace have shared with me feelings of worry, anxiety, and distress, and I completely understand. The immigration system in this country has been broken for a long time. It’s nothing new. Our leaders should have come together to work on immigration reform a long time ago, but they haven’t. For us, this isn’t about politics, this is about protecting the human dignity we all have as beloved children of God. In a civilized world, it is totally possible and absolutely necessary to welcome the one who is different, without jeopardizing the safety of our country. Jesus calls us to welcome the stranger, the foreigner, and the one who is different, when he says, “I was a stranger, and you welcomed me” (Mt 25:35).

In this time of uncertainty, I would like to invite all our Queen of Peace community to grow in our faiththat good always wins over evil; love triumphs over separation and division. The Hispanic community has brought a lot of good to this country, to the Church in the US, and to Queen of Peace Parish. It has brought a lot of faith, youthfulness, Catholic traditions, renewed spirituality, hundreds of volunteers, dedication to the family life, love for our Blessed Mother, devotion to the saints, and so much more! We see it here in our parish – the dedication to ministries that serve at Holy Mass, to teach the faith as Catechists, and to movements like the Charismatic Prayer Group, Betanias, Quinceaneras, the youth and young adult groups, Ballet Folklorico, MFCC, …, among many others, along with the hundreds of youth enrolled in our religious education program.

Pope St. John Paul II loved to proclaim everywhere since the beginning of his pontificate, “Do not be afraid.” God, our loving Father protects us, as He did St. Joseph and Mary when they had to migrate to Egypt, carrying their newborn in their arms. We have our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe! And let us not forget, when the people of Latin America were going through moments of insecurity and enduring much loss, God sent his Mother to comfort his ‘youngest children.’ On that occasion at Tepeyac, the Virgin Mary said to St. Juan Diego, “Do not be distressed, my littlest son. Let not your heart be troubled ... Am I not here, with you, I who am your Mother?”

I assure you, our Church, our archdiocese, and our parish stand with our immigrant brothers and sisters, ready to defend, protect, and help in this cause for the good of our community. We are a family – together in good times and in bad. This is a time for unity, not division, for being together, for loving more, for growing more in faith. As Archbishop Gomezsaid, “We need to be people of peace, people of compassion. Love not hate. Mercy not revenge. These are the tools to rebuild our nation and renew the American dream.”

Now, let us pray for unity, so that the wounds of division can be healed, and for our leaders, including our President-Elect. May God grant them wisdom and mercy, and the heart to feel the pain of those who are suffering. And may Our Lady of Guadalupe — the Mother of Jesus and the Mother of all the peoples of the Americas — may she watch over us and help us to truly become one nation under God.

Después de las elecciones, es momento de unidad y misericordia: “Porque era forastero, y me acogisteis” (Mt 25:35)

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Sé por mis encuentros con muchos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas, que con el resultado de las elecciones se ha suscitado temor y preocupación en la comunidad hispana. El Arzobispo José Gómez de la Arquiócesis de Los Ángeles ilustró una imagen muy triste pero muy real de cómo se sienten muchos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas: “Ahora mismo - en toda la ciudad, y en ciudades de todo el país - hay niños que se van a dormir asustados. Hay hombres y mujeres que no pueden dormir porque no saben qué hacer, están tratando de descifrar qué hacer cuando el gobierno venga a separarlos de sus niños y sus seres queridos”.

Muchos de ustedes aquí en Reina de la Paz, han compartido conmigo sentimientos de preocupación, ansiedad, angustia, y lo entiendo completamente. El sistema de inmigración de este país ha estado roto por mucho tiempo. No es nada nuevo. Nuestros líderes debieron haber hecho una reforma migratoriahace mucho, pero no lo han hecho. Para nosotros, esto no se trata de política, se trata de proteger la dignidad humana que todos tenemos como hijos amados de Dios. En un mundo civilizado, es totalmente posible y absolutamente necesario darle la bienvenida a los que son diferentes sin poner en riesgo la seguridad de nuestro país. Jesús nos llamó a darle la bienvenida al extranjero, al forastero, al que es diferente, cuando nos dice: “Era forastero, y me acogisteis” (Mt 25:35).

En este momento de incertidumbre, me gustaría invitar a toda la comunidad de Reina de la Paz a crecer en la fe, ya que el bien siempre vence al mal; el amor triunfa sobre la separación y la división. La comunidad hispana a traído mucho bien a este país, a la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos, y a Reina de la Paz. Ha traído mucha fe, juventud, tradiciones Católicas, una espiritualidad renovada, cientos de voluntarios, dedicación a la vida familiar, amor por nuestra Santa Madre, devoción a los santos, y ¡mucho más! Lo vemos aquí en nuestra parroquia – la dedicación a los ministerios que sirven en la Santa Misa, a enseñar la fe como catequistas, y en movimientos como el Grupo de Oración Carismático, Betanias, Quinceañeras, los grupos de jóvenes y jóvenes adultos, Ballet Folklorico, MFCC,…entre muchos otros, junto con los cientos de niños inscritos en nuestro programa de educación religiosa.

Al Papa San Juan Pablo II le encantaba proclamar desde el principio de su pontificado, “No tengáis miedo”. Dios, nuestro padre, cuidará de todos nosotros, como protegió a San José y a la Virgen María cuando tuvieron que emigrar a Egipto, con su recién nacido en brazos. ¡Tenemos a Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, Rey del Universo! Y no olvidemos quecuando los pueblos de Latinoamérica estaban atravesando por momentos de inseguridad y despojamiento, Dios envió a su Madre para confortar a sus “hijos más pequeños”. En esa ocasión en el Tepeyac, la Virgencita dijo: “Que es nada lo que te asusta y aflige. No se turbe tu corazón, no temas…. ¿Acaso no estoy aquí yo, que soy tu madre?”

Yo les aseguro que nuestra Iglesia, nuestra arquidiócesis, y nuestra parroquia están con ustedes, listos para defender, proteger, y ayudar a esta causa por el bien de nuestra comunidad. Somos una familia – en las buenas y en las malas. Este es momento de unidad, no división, de estar juntos, de amar más, de crecer más en la fe. Como dijo el Arzobispo Gómez, “Debemos ser gente de paz, gente de compasión. Amor no odio. Misericordia no venganza. Estas son las herramientas para reconstruir nuestra nación y renovar el sueño americano”.

Ahora oremos por unidad, para sanar las heridas de la división, y por nuestros líderes, incluyendo nuestro presidente-electo. Que Dios les conceda sabiduría y misericordia y un corazón abierto a las necesidades de todos los que sufren. Y que nuestra Virgen de Guadalupe – madre de Jesús y Madre de las Américas –nos cuide y nos ayude a ser verdaderamente una nación bajo Dios.
