ADVENT MISSION WILL EQUIP US TO BECOME INTENTIONAL DISCIPLES OF CHRIST

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today we begin a new liturgical year, with the Season of Advent. During this time of joyful anticipation of our Lord Jesus Christ, we have a gift to help us prepare our hearts for His coming, and to help us prepare for what He has in store for us in the year ahead. It is our Advent Mission, which will take place next weekend. This year, the Advent Mission will focus on “Forming Intentional Disciples.”

Why is it so important to be an intentional disciple of Christ? First, because it’s what the Lord calls us to - to be His disciples and follow Him with every aspect of our lives. Secondly, because our Church today and our current society need disciples. Sherry Weddell, author of the book Forming Intentional Disciples (from which our Advent Mission is based on), has studied parishes in the United States for years. In her research, she made the following findings: Only 30% of Americans who were raised Catholic are still practicing. Roughly half of these are at Mass on a given weekend. Another 38 percent consider themselves Catholic but rarely or never attend Mass, and the final 32 percent no longer consider themselves Catholic at all. Nearly four times more people leave the Church than enter it. Many self-identified Catholics are not certain that a personal relationship with God is even possible.

This data can seem disheartening, but it’s not for us to sit in despair. Rather it’s to entice us to share with others the Good News. Perhaps you know people of who the statistics are talking about – family and friends who have left the Church. You will meet them in the coming weeks, at Christmas and other family gatherings this holiday season Our Advent Mission will equip us to reach out to them, to be more missionary, more caring, and more attentive to the needs of the people. Recently, Pope Francis said, “We need to become ever more fully a community of missionary disciples, filled with love of the Lord Jesus and enthusiasm for the spread of the Gospel. The Christian community is meant to be a sign and prophecy of God’s plan for the entire human family. We are called to be bearers of good news for a society gripped by disconcerting social, cultural and spiritual shifts, and increasing polarization.” Our Advent Mission will guide us in becoming these bearers of Good News. It will help us to see where we are truthfully in our relationship with Jesus, how to grow deeper in that relationship, and finally how to give witness to our family, friends, coworkers, and everyone we encounter.

If you are in a ministry, and especially if you are the leader of a ministry, it is essential that you come and listen. The spirit of discipleship will give new life to your ministry and a renewed zeal to announce Jesus Christ through the service you give to our parish. Parents and grandparents, I strongly encourage you to come too, because it will help you to transmit the faith to your children and grandchildren. Whether you’re a long time parishioner or new to our parish; born into the church or a recent convert; young or old; single or married. We can all gain something valuable from this Mission.

On Friday morning, from 9-11 am, we will have a special session for seniors. Then, at 6:30pm we will officially open the Mission with a bilingual Mass, celebrated by Bishop Jorge Rodriguez. After Mass, he will speak to us briefly. Then, we will begin our Forming Intentional Disciples program with a speaker from the St. Catherine of Siena Institute. The program will then continue Saturday, at 8:30am. At 1:00pm the parish will provide lunch. The program will end at 3:30pm. At this time, everyone will be invited to end the Mission with Mass at 4pm. It would help if you signed up beforehand to get an idea of how many tables to set up and how much food we will need, but you may come even if you don’t sign up beforehand.

Let’s welcome this new liturgical year with a new spirit, better equipped to become disciples of Jesus Christ!

LA MISIÓN DE ADVIENTO NOS DARÁ LAS HERRAMIENTAS PARA SER DISCIPULOS DE CRISTO

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Hoy iniciamos un nuevo año litúrgico, con el tiempo de Adviento. En este tiempo de anticipación por la llegada de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, tenemos un regalo que preparará nuestros corazones para su venida y para ayudarnos a estar listos para lo que nos tiene preparado este año. Se trata de nuestra Misión de Adviento, la cual se llevará a cabo el próximo fin de semana. Este año, la Misión se enfocará en la “Formación de Discípulos Intencionales”.

¿Por qué es tan importante ser un discípulo intencional de Cristo? Primero, porque es a lo que nos llama el Señor – ser Su discípulo y seguirlo con cada aspecto de nuestras vidas. Segundo, porque nuestra Iglesia y nuestra sociedad necesitan discípulos. Sherry Weddell, autora del libro Formación de Discípulos Intencionales (del cual se basa nuestra misión), ha estudiado parroquias en los Estados Unidos por muchos años. En sus estudios descubrió lo siguiente: Sólo el 30 por ciento de estadounidenses quienes se criaron cómo católicos siguen practicando la fe. Más o menos la mitad de ellos van a Misa los domingos. Otro 38 por ciento se considera Católico, pero rara vez o nunca va a Misa, y el otro 32 por ciento ni siquiera se considera católico. Casi cuatro veces más personas dejan la Iglesia que las que entran. Muchos que se identifican cómo católicos no están seguros de que una relación personal con Dios sea posible. Estos cambios en la participación en nuestra fe no sólo existen en la comunidad anglosajona, sino en los hispanos también, y afectan a nuestros niños que se están criando en este país.

Estas estadísticas pueden sonar preocupantes, pero no es para que nos desilusionemos. Es para que nos motive a compartir la Buena Nueva con los demás. Muchos de nosotros conocemos a gente – familiares, amigos, vecinos, compañeros de trabajo – que han dejado la Iglesia. Los vamos a ver en estas fechas Navideñas. ¿Cómo les hablaremos de Dios? ¿Cómo daremos testimonio de nuestra fe de una manera compasiva, y atenta a sus necesidades? Nuestra Misión de Adviento nos dará esas respuestas. Recientemente el Papa Francisco dijo: “Tenemos que ser cada vez más plenamente una comunidad de discípulos misioneros, llenos de amor al Señor Jesús y de entusiasmo por la difusión del Evangelio. La comunidad cristiana debe ser un signo y un anuncio profético del plan de Dios para toda la familia humana. Estamos llamados a ser portadores de buenas noticias para una sociedad sujeta a desconcertantes cambios sociales, culturales y espirituales, y a una creciente polarización.” Nuestra Misión de Adviento nos guiará para ser estos portadores de la Buena Nueva. Nos ayudará a ver en donde estamos verdaderamente en nuestra relación con Jesús, cómo profundizar en esa relación, y finalmente, como dar testimonio a nuestras familias, amigos, y a toda persona con la que nos encontremos.

Si están en un ministerio, y especialmente si son líderes de un ministerio, es esencial que vengan y escuchen. El espíritu de discipulado le dará nueva vida a su ministerio y unas ganas renovadas de anunciar a Jesucristo a través del servicio que le dan a nuestra parroquia. Padres y abuelos, les recomiendo que vayan, ya que estas pláticas les ayudarán a trasmitirles la fe a sus niños y a sus nietos. No importa si han sido parte de esta parroquia por muchos años o por pocos; si crecieron como católicos o se acaban de convertir; si son jóvenes o viejos; solteros o casados. Todos podemos aprender algo valioso de esta Misión.

Esta iniciará con una Misa bilingüe celebrada por el Obispo Jorge Rodríguez. Después de Misa, el obispo nos dará una corta charla. Después, iniciaran las pláticas en español sobre la Formación de Discípulos Intencionales. Estas continuaran el sábado a las 11:00am. A la 1:00pm, la parroquia les proporcionará un almuerzo. Las pláticas terminarán a las 6:00pm. Entonces, se les invitará a todos a terminar la Misión con Misa de 6:30pm. Nos ayudaría mucho si se inscriben antes, después de Misa para saber cuántas mesas acomodar y cuanta comida necesitaremos, pero de todas formas pueden venir, aun si no se han inscrito.

Démosle la bienvenida a un nuevo año litúrgico con un nuevo espíritu, mejor preparados para convertirnos en discípulos de Jesucristo.
