PARISH PILGRIMS PREPARE FOR ENCOUNTER WITH CHRIST AND HIS MERCY THROUGH WORLD YOUTH DAY IN POLAND

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

A group of pilgrims from our parish is beginning a life-changing journey. Thirty people - including mostly youth, a few adults, Father Fernando and myself - will be in Krakow Poland, for World Youth Day 2016. We are excited to represent Queen of Peace in this international event which is so fundamental to the renewal of our Church.

Saint John Paul II created this massive worldwide meeting with the youth in 1985. Since then, millions of youth from all parts of the world come together every two or three years to meet with the Holy Father, to share their faith, and most importantly, to have an encounter with Jesus Christ. In his last WYD, in 2002, Saint John Paul II said, “When, back in 1985, I wanted to start the World Youth Days… I imagined a powerful moment in which the young people of the world could meet Christ, who is eternally young, and could learn from him how to be bearers of the Gospel to other young people.” (17th WYD Evening with Young People.)

In participating in this pilgrimage, our young people really do bear the Good News to others. It is an incredible sight to have enormous crowds of youth from all over the world praying together as one people of God, singing, dancing, and praising the Lord. It is a sign to the world that our Church is full of life and it truly is universal! In a video message to the pilgrims, Pope Francis highlighted the beauty of this diversity and universality of the Church, when he said, “Dear young people from throughout Europe, Africa, America, Asia and Oceania! ... I am very anxious to meet you and to offer the world a new sign of harmony, a mosaic of different faces, from many races, languages, peoples and cultures, but all united in the name of Jesus, who is the Face of Mercy.” We at Queen of Peace are so blessed to have this mosaic of faces our Holy Father speaks of, and we too can be united in the name of Jesus if we allow Him to work in us.

Fitting with the Jubilee Year of Mercy, this year’s WYD theme is “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy,” (Mt 5:7) and it will be centered around Polish saints John Paul II and St. Faustina Kowalska, to whom Jesus revealed His Divine Mercy. The pilgrims will be immersed in the mercy of God, in a country that has fully experienced it. In the middle of communism, of repression and persecution, God showed His mercy and His love to the people of Poland. Saint Pope John Paul II gave witness to that by responding to the violence in his country not with revenge or violence, but with the same love and mercy our Lord gave him.

I invite you, brothers and sisters, to live out this pilgrimage with us, to experience the Lord’s mercy. In this time of the pilgrimage, I encourage you to dwell on these words - “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” (Mt 5:7) and to pray daily the Chaplet of Divine Mercy for our youth, our world, and Pope Francis.

Lastly, I ask you to please pray for us pilgrims. This pilgrimage entails leaving our comfort zone, making sacrifices, and yes, suffering. There will be big crowds, exhaustion, hunger; plans will fall through. But this precariousness is a beautiful opportunity for us to put our trust completely in the Lord, to experience that He provides and that in our suffering, we can find joy. The Lord is waiting for us in Poland to give us graces. For many youth, it’ll be a call to a vocation. Let us pray that all of us may be open to receiving what He wants to give us.

PEREGRINOS DE LA PARROQUIA SE PREPARAN PARA ENCONTRARSE CON CRISTO Y SU MISERICORDIA A TRAVES DE LA JORNADA MUNDIAL DE LA JUVENTUD EN POLONIA

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Un grupo de peregrinos de nuestra parroquia está por comenzar una jornada que cambiará sus vidas. Treinta personas – la mayoría jóvenes, y algunos adultos incluyéndome a mí y al Padre Fernando – estarán en Cracovia Polonia, para la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud. Estamos emocionados de representar a Reina de la Paz en este evento internacional que es tan fundamental para la renovación de nuestra Iglesia.

El Santo Juan Pablo II creó esta junta masiva de jóvenes a nivel mundial en 1985. Desde entonces, millones de jóvenes de todas partes del mundo se reúnen cada dos o tres años para encontrarse con el Santo Padre, compartir su fe, y lo más importante, tener un encuentro con Jesucristo. En su última JMJ, en el 2001, el Santo Juan Pablo II dijo, “Cuando, en el ya lejano 1985, quise poner en marcha las Jornadas mundiales de la juventud... imaginaba las Jornadas mundiales como un momento fuerte en el que los jóvenes del mundo pudieran encontrarse con Cristo, el eternamente joven, y aprender de él a ser los evangelizadores de los demás jóvenes”. (XVII Jornada Mundial de la Juventud Vigilia de Oración).

Al participar en esta peregrinación, nuestros jóvenes en realidad evangelizan a los demás. Es una vista increíble el tener a montones enormes de jóvenes de alrededor del mundo rezando juntos como un sólo pueblo de Dios, cantando, bailando, y alabando al Señor. ¡Es una señal para el mundo que nuestra Iglesia esta lleva de vida y en verdad es universal! En un video-mensaje a los peregrinos, el Papa Francisco recalcó la belleza de esta diversidad y universalidad de la Iglesia cuando se dirigió a los peregrinos que llegarán de toda Europa, África, América, Asia y Oceanía diciendo, “Deseo mucho encontrarme con ustedes, para ofrecer al mundo un nuevo signo de armonía, un mosaico de rostros diferentes, de tantas razas, lenguas, pueblos y culturas, pero todos unidos en el nombre de Jesús, que es el Rostro de la Misericordia”. Nosotros en Reina de la Paz tenemos la bendición de tener este mosaico de rostros del que habla el Santo Padre, y también nosotros podemos estar unidos en el nombre de Jesús, si permitimos que trabaje en nosotros.

Adecuado con el Jubileo de la Misericordia, el tema de la JMJ este año es “Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque ellos alcanzarán misericordia”. (Mt 5:7) y se enfocará en dos santos polacos San Juan Pablo II y Santa Faustina Kowalska, a quien Jesús le revelo Su Divina Misericordia. Los peregrinos estarán sumergidos en la misericordia de Dios, en un país que la ha experimentado. En medio del comunismo, la represión, y la persecución, Dios mostró Su amor y misericordia al pueblo de Polonia. El Santo Juan Pablo II dio testimonio al responder a la violencia en su país no con venganza ni violencia, sino con el mismo amor y misericordia que el Señor le dio a él. 

Los invito, hermanos y hermanas, a vivir esta peregrinación con nosotros, y experimentar la misericordia del Señor. En este tiempo de peregrinación, los invito a reposar en estas palabras – “Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque ellos alcanzarán misericordia”. (Mt 5:7) y a rezar diariamente la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia por nuestros jóvenes, nuestro mundo, y el Papa Francisco. 

Por último, les pido que oren por nuestros peregrinos. Esta peregrinación implica el dejar atrás nuestra comodidad, el hacer sacrificios, y si, el sufrimiento. Habrá multitudes de gente, cansancio, hambre; algunos planes se vendrán abajo. Pero esta precariedad es una bella oportunidad para confiar completamente en el Señor, para experimentar que Él provee y que en nuestro sufrimiento, podemos encontrar alegría. El Señor nos espera en Polonia para darnos gracias. Para muchos jóvenes, una de ellas será una llamada a su vocación. Oremos para que todos estemos abiertos a recibir lo que el Señor quiere darnos.
