WORLD YOUTH DAY: A HOPE FOR THE RENEWAL OF THE CHURCH AND THE NEW EVANGELIZATION

Greetings from World Youth Day 2016 in Poland! It is an incredible blessing to be here with about 30 pilgrims from our parish, participating in this renewal of faith for our church. Our group is part of a larger group of about 300 youth and chaperones from the Archdiocese of Denver. Together, we’ve prayed, sang, and listened to the Word of God, meditating on how it touches our lives.

My first day in Europe was a clear reminder of the need for the new evangelization. I spent Tuesday afternoon walking around Prague, waiting for the rest of the group to arrive from Germany, on our way to Kraków, Poland. Much to my surprise, I found a deeply sad and depressed population, suffering the outcome of two world wars, Nazism and almost fifty years under Communism. Sadly, 80% of the citizens of Prague declare themselves to be atheists.

The arrival of the pilgrims brought a totally different experience. To see the youth, formed and trained in the beauty of the Gospel, was a sign there's hope for our Church and our world. On the first night we were all together, our youth gathered to pray, sing and dance in a public parking lot, catching the attention of many. We walked through the streets, singing along to guitars, drums and tambourines; praying the rosary aloud together, and praising the Lord as one. We did it again the second day - processing for miles, bringing Jesus Christ to the many who don’t know him. Passersby stood by watching, waving, taking photos, surprised at this visible sign of the life of the Church.

This is the kind of spirit I hope we bring back to Queen of Peace. I invite you to be inspired by these youth, to live your faith publicly – to not be afraid to spread the Good News to those around you. People are suffering, they are looking for meaning in their lives, and they are waiting for a Word of hope. They need God in their lives, because without God in our lives, we find death. We saw this reality as well on our pilgrimage, when we visited Terezin, a concentration camp in the Czech Republic, used by the Nazis as a transit camp for Jews en route to Auschwitz and other extermination camps. It was devastating to witness the conditions hundreds of thousand ofinnocent Jewish brothers and sisters suffered because they were different, because at that time, they were an obstacle to a distorted image of perfection.. We can’t simply leave this tragedy in the past. It shows us what man is capable of when we remove God from our lives and instead try to make ourselves God.

Once again, I invite you to be a part of this pilgrimage with us. On page 6, you will find the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy. Please, take a few minutes out of your busy schedule to pray this Chaplet. Take a few minutes to be with the Lord and experience His mercy. He is waiting for you.

Lastly, I ask that you pay close attention to the words of Pope Francis in his homily to the youth in Poland, and not just what the secular media try to make him say. Poland is a nation very similar to the Czech Republic, in the fact that it was demolished by the diabolical ideologies of Nazism and Communism, but it reacted to the attacks with the beauty of its Christian culture. And Christian culture (with its music, art, literature, language, traditions, etc.) whether it happens in a country, in a neighborhood, or even in a parish, always resists and overcomes the devastating effects of any atheistic ideology.

JORNADA MUNDIAL DE LA JUVENTUD: UNA ESPERANZA PARA LA RENOVACIÓN DE LA IGLESIA Y LA NUEVA EVANGELIZACIÓN

¡Saludos desde la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud 2016 en Polonia! Es una bendición increíble estar aquí con unos 30 peregrinos de nuestra parroquia, que participan en esta renovación de la fe para nuestra iglesia. Nuestro grupo es parte de un grupo más grande de alrededor de 300 jóvenes y chaperones de la Arquidiócesis de Denver. Juntos, hemos cantado, y escuchando la Palabra de Dios, meditando en la forma en que toca nuestras vidas.

Mi primer día en Europa fue un claro recordatorio de la necesidad de la nueva evangelización. He pasado el martes por la tarde caminando por Praga, esperando que el resto del grupo llegara de Alemania, de camino a Cracovia, Polonia. Para mi sorpresa, me encontré con una población profundamente triste y deprimida, sufriendo el resultado de dos guerras mundiales, el nazismo y casi cincuenta años bajo el comunismo. Lamentablemente, el 80% de los ciudadanos de Praga se declaran ateos.

La llegada de los peregrinos trajo una experiencia totalmente diferente. Ver a la juventud, formada y entrenada en la belleza del Evangelio, fue una señal de que hay esperanza para nuestra Iglesia y nuestro mundo. En la primera noche que estuvimos todos juntos, nuestros jóvenes se reunieron para orar, cantar y bailar en un estacionamiento público, captando la atención de muchos. Caminamos por las calles, cantando junto a las guitarras, los tambores y panderetas; rezamos el rosario en voz alta, y alabamos al Señor como un sólo pueblo. Lo hicimos de nuevo al siguiente día - procesamos por varias millas, llevando a Jesucristo a los muchos que no lo conocen. La gente se detenía, nos saludaba, y tomaba fotos, sorprendidos por este signo visible de la vida de la Iglesia.

Este es el tipo de espíritu que espero traer de vuelta a Reina de la Paz. Los invito a ser inspirado por estos jóvenes, a vivir su fe públicamente - a no tener miedo de difundir la Buena Nueva a los que los rodean. La gente está sufriendo, están buscando un sentido a sus vidas, y están esperando una palabra de esperanza. Ellos necesitan a Dios en sus vidas, porque sin Dios en nuestras vidas, nos encontramos con la muerte. Vimos esta realidad en nuestra peregrinación, cuando visitamos Terezin, un campo de concentración en la República Checa, usado por los nazis como campo de tránsito para Judíos en camino a Auschwitz y otros campos de exterminio. Fue devastador presenciar las condiciones de cientos de miles de hermanos y hermanas judíos inocentes que sufrieron porque eran diferentes, porque en ese momento, eran un obstáculo para una imagen distorsionada de la perfección. No podemos simplemente dejar esta tragedia en el pasado. Nos muestra lo que el hombre es capaz de hacer cuando quitamos a Dios de nuestras vidas y en lugar nos creemos dioses.

Una vez más, los invito a ser parte de esta peregrinación con nosotros. En la página nueve, se encuentra la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia. Por favor, tome unos minutos de su apretada agenda para rezar esta coronilla. Tómese unos minutos para estar con el Señor y experimentar su misericordia. Él está esperando.

Por último, pido que presten mucha atención a las palabras del Papa Francisco en su homilía a la juventud en Polonia, y no sólo lo que los medios seculares tratan de hacerle decir. Polonia es una nación muy similar a la República Checa, en el hecho de que fue demolida por las ideologías diabólicas del nazismo y el comunismo, pero reaccionó a los ataques con la belleza de su cultura cristiana. Y la cultura cristiana (con su música, el arte, la literatura, lengua, tradiciones, etc.) ya sea que suceda en un país, en un vecindario, o incluso en una parroquia, siempre resiste y vence a los efectos devastadores de cualquier ideología atea.
