DISCIPLESHIP: UNDERSTANDING IDENTITY, TRUST, GRATITUDE, AND LOVE

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Last week, I announced to you our intent to more fully and more profoundly embrace discipleship as a way of life at Queen of Peace. To do so, we have to understand the spirituality of discipleship and its four core values: identity, trust, gratitude, and love. By understanding and living out these values, we will more readily begin living as the authentic Disciples of Christ He wants us to be.

The first core value is identity, knowing who we are. We live in a society obsessed with individualism. The world tells us we must “find ourselves,” and find what defines us. But as Christians, we know our true identity doesn’t lie in ourselves, but in the one who made us. We were created by God, for God. We are His children. It is important for us to realize this, that we are not orphans in this world, we have a loving Father who is involved in everything we do. If we are allchildren of God, this means we are all one family, one single body of Christ. We have a sense of belonging.

Building up on identity is the second core value, trust. If we know we are God’s children, then we know He will provide for us abundantly. In today’s Psalm we proclaimed, “A bountiful rain you showered down, O God, upon your inheritance; you restored the land when it languished; your flock settled in it; in your goodness, O God, you provided it for the needy.”  (Ps 68:10-11) We see here that God provided for His people, and He does the same in our lives today. He gives us just what we need, so there is no need to hold on to our control. We are happier when we surrender our plans and allow His will to be done in our lives.  “We can think that we’re causing things to happen and trust in ourselves instead of realizing that when we surrender our wills, it is God who does for us what we cannot do for ourselves. That’s the basic understanding of trust.” (Making Stewardship a Way of Life.) Next, comes gratitude. If we understand that we are God’s children, and everything He gives and doesn’t give us is out of love, for our own good, then we are grateful. If we don’t have it, we don’t need it, and if He wants us to have it, nothing is impossible for Him. By having gratitude and appreciating everything He gives us, then everything becomes a gift and we learn that we don’t need more than what He gives us.

The fourth core value of discipleship is love, a love that’s more than just in feelings, but rather a love that is demonstrated concretely, by giving. God says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Mt. 22:37) We love by putting God first and giving Him everything - our time, talent, and treasure. God shows us His love by giving us even more. He takes our giving and He blesses it, multiplies it, gives back a hundredfold.

Soon, we will have the opportunity to commit to giving God some of our time, through prayer. I encourage you to look at our Discipleship section on page seven and begin to consider the ways you can give your time to God in prayer.

DISCIPULADO: ENTENDIENDO LA IDENTIDAD, LA CONFIANZA, LA GRATITUD Y EL AMOR

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

La semana pasada, anuncié nuestra intención de adoptar más plena y profundamante el discipulado como manera de vida en Reina de la Paz. Para hacer eso, debemos entender la espiritualidad del discipulado y sus cuatro valores centrales: la identidad, la confianza, la gratitud y el amor. Al entender y vivir estos valores, estaremos mejor preparados para comenzar a vivir como los autenticos discipulos de Cristo que Él quiere que seamos.

El primer valor fundamental es la identidad, saber quiénes somos. Vivimos en una sociedad obsesionada con el individualismo. El mundo nos dice que debemos "encontrarnos", y encontrar lo que nos define. Pero como cristianos, sabemos que nuestra verdadera identidad no reside en nosotros mismos, sino en Él quien nos hizo. Fuimos creados por Dios, para Dios. Somos sus hijos. Es importante que nos demos cuenta de esto, que no somos huérfanos en este mundo, tenemos un Padre amoroso que está involucrado en todo lo que hacemos. Si todos somos hijos de Dios, esto significa que todos somos una familia, un solo cuerpo de Cristo. Tenemos un sentido de pertenencia.

El segundo valor fundamental es la confianza. Si sabemos que somos hijos de Dios, entonces sabemos que Él proveerá para nosotros abundantemente. En el salmo de hoy hemos anunciado, " A tu pueblo extenuado diste fuerzas, nos colmaste, Señor, de tus favores y habitó tu rebaño en esta tierra, que tu amor preparó para los pobres. "(Salmo 67:10-11). Vemos aquí que Dios proveyó para su pueblo, y hace lo mismo hoy en día en nuestras vidas. Él nos da lo que necesitamos, asi que no hay necesidad de aferrarnos a nuestro control. Somos más felices cuando renunciamos a nuestros planes y permitimos que se haga Su voluntad en nuestras vidas. "Podemos pensar que nosotros estamos haciendo que las cosas sucedan y tener confianza en nosotros mismos en lugar de darnos cuenta de que cuando renunciamos a nuestra voluntad, Dios es el que hace por nosotros lo que no podemos hacer por nosotros mismos. Esa es la comprensión básica de la confianza." (Making Stewardship a Way of Life.)

El tercer valos fundamental es la gratitud. Si entendemos que somos hijos de Dios, y todo lo que nos da y no nos dan es por amor, por nuestro propio bien, entonces estamos agradecidos. Si no lo tenemos, no lo necesitamos, y si quiere que tengamos, nada es imposible para Él. Al tener gratitud y apreciar todo lo que Él nos da, entonces todo se convierte en un regalo y nos damos cuenta de que no necesitamos más de lo que nos da. 

El cuarto valor fundamental del discipulado es el amor, un amor que es más que sólo sentimientos, sino más bien un amor que se demuestra concretamente, al dar. Dios dice: "Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente." (Mt. 22:37) Amamos poniendo a Dios primero y dándole todo - nuestro tiempo, talento, y tesoro. Dios nos muestra su amor al darnos aún más. Toma lo que le damos y lo bendice, lo multiplica, lo devuelve el ciento por uno.

Pronto, tendremos la oportunidad de comprometernos a darle a Dios algo de nuestro tiempo, a través de la oración. Los animo a mirar nuestra sección de Discipulado en la página siete y empezar a considerar las formas en las que pueden dar de su tiempo a Dios en la oración, como el Rosario, Laudes, o Lectio Divina.
