GIVING BACK TO GOD A PORTION OF WHAT IS HIS STRENGTHENS US AND THE ONE BODY OF CHRIST

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today, the Church gives us wonderful readings that are perfect for us, as we continue our journey toward becoming Disciples of Christ. In the Gospel, Jesus is very direct in telling us how we become His Disciples. “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple...anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.” (Lk 14:26-27, 33). The Lord wants to be first in our lives above all else - our relationships, our success, our things, our money - because only He can give us true happiness.

The Lord invites us to put Him first in everything, including of course, our treasure. That is why we, as Catholics tithe. We give God the first ten percent of our income – not the leftovers, but the first and the best portion, out of gratitude for what He has provided for us. Our money isn’t really ours. By tithing, we are simply recognizing that God is the owner, and we simply manage His treasure. We give back to Him a portion of what is His. It is a concrete sign of our love for Him. In turn, God promises to take our treasure and bless it, multiply it, and give us a hundredfold. “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and try me in this, says the LORD of Hosts: Shall I not open the floodgates of heaven, to pour down blessing upon you without measure.” Malachi 3:10

The Catechism of the Catholic Church also invites us to tithe for the good of the One Body of Christ. “(‘You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church’) means that the faithful are obliged to assist with the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability. [NT2]” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2043). This precept is a response to Jesus’ call: “I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!” (Mt 25:40).

Our response to tithe for the good of the One Body of Christ is a gift for us – it’s an invitation to grow in love of God and each other. “From the very beginning Christians have brought, along with the bread and wine for the Eucharist, gifts to share with those in need. This custom of the collection, ever appropriate, is inspired by the example of Christ who became poor to make us rich: [176] those who are well off, and who are also willing, give as each chooses. What is gathered is given to him who presides to assist orphans and widows, those whom illness or any other cause has deprived of resources, prisoners, immigrants and, in a word, all who are in need.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1351).  

I invite you to consider, brothers and sisters, how much the Lord has given you and what are you giving Him in return. Are you giving Him your first and best or the leftovers? God doesn’t want our giving out of obligation. He gives us the freedom to do so voluntarily, out of gratitude. As St. Paul says in today’s reading, “I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that the good you do might not be forced but voluntary.” (Phmn 1:14).  As we enter into a time dedicated to increasing our time of faith and prayer, ask the Lord to give you the grace to trust that if you put Him first, He will repay you a hundredfold.

EL REGRESARLE A DIOS PARTE DE LO QUE ES SUYO NOS FORTALEZE Y FORTALEZE AL CUERPO UNICO DE CRISTO 

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Hoy la Iglesia nos da unas maravillosas lecturas que son perfectamente adecuadas para nosotros, al continuar nuestro camino de ser Discípulos de Cristo. En el Evangelio, Jesús es muy directo al decirnos como nos convertimos en sus Discípulos. "Si alguno quiere seguirme y no me prefiere a su padre y a su madre, a su esposa y a sus hijos, a sus hermanos y a sus hermanas, más aún, a sí mismo, no puede ser mi discípulo. Y el que no carga su cruz y me sigue, no puede ser mi discípulo... cualquiera de ustedes que no renuncie a todos sus bienes, no puede ser mi discípulo". (Lc. 14:26-27, 33). El Señor quiere tener el primer lugar en nuestras vidas sobre todo lo demás – nuestras relaciones, nuestro éxito, nuestras cosas, nuestro dinero – porque sólo Él nos puede dar la verdadera felicidad.

El Señor nos invita a ponerlo primero en todo, incluyendo por supuesto, nuestro tesoro. Es por eso que como católicos, damos el diezmo. Le damos a Dios el primer diez por ciento de nuestros ingresos – no las sobras, sino la primera y la mejor porción, por gratitud por lo que ha proveído para nosotros. Nuestro dinero en realidad no es nuestro. Al dar el diezmo, simplemente estamos reconociendo que Dios es el dueño, y nosotros simplemente manejamos su tesoro. Le damos una porción de lo que es suyo. Es una muestra concreta de nuestro amor hacia Él. A su vez, Dios promete tomar nuestro tesoro, bendecirlo, multiplicarlo, y darnos cien veces más. "Traigan todo el diezmo al alfolí[a][b], para que haya alimento en Mi casa; y pónganme ahora a prueba en esto;” dice el Señor de los ejércitos “si no les abro las ventanas de los cielos, y derramo para ustedes bendición hasta que sobreabunde. " (Malaquías 3:10)

El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica también nos invita a dar el diezmo por el bien del Cuerpo de Cristo. "('Ayudar a la Iglesia en sus necesidades») enuncia que los fieles están obligados de ayudar, cada uno según su posibilidad, a las necesidades materiales de la Iglesia (cf CIC can. 222)". (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica 2043) Este mandamiento es la respuesta a la llamada de Jesús: "En verdad les digo que en cuanto lo hicieron a uno de estos hermanos Míos, aun a los más pequeños, a Mí lo hicieron". (Mateo 25:40). 

Nuestra respuesta dando el diezmo por el bien del Cuerpo de Cristo es un regalo para nosotros – es una invitación para crecer en nuestro amor a Dios y a uno al otro. "Desde el principio, junto con el pan y el vino para la Eucaristía, los cristianos presentan también sus dones para compartirlos con los que tienen necesidad. Esta costumbre de la colecta, siempre actual, se inspira en el ejemplo de Cristo que se hizo pobre para enriquecernos (cf 2 Co 8,9): Los que son ricos y lo desean, cada uno según lo que se ha impuesto; lo que es recogido es entregado al que preside, y él atiende a los huérfanos y viudas, a los que la enfermedad u otra causa priva de recursos, los presos, los inmigrantes y, en una palabra, socorre a todos los que están en necesidad".  (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica 1351).

Hermanos, los invito a considerar cuanto les ha dado el Señor y que le están dando a cambio. ¿Le están dando lo primero y lo mejor, o las sobras? Dios no quiere que le demos por obligación. Nos da la libertad de dar voluntariamente, por gratitud. Como dice San Pablo en la segunda lectura de hoy, "Pero no he querido hacer nada sin tu consentimiento, para que el favor que me haces no sea como por obligación, sino por tu propia voluntad". (Fmn 1:14) Pronto comenzaremos una etapa dedicada a aumentar nuestra fe y tiempo en oración. Pidámosle al Señor que nos de la gracia de confiar en que si lo ponemos a Él primero, Él nos dará el ciento por uno.
