WITH GRATITUDE FOR GOD’S MERCY, LET US PREPARE FOR DISCIPLESHIP OF FAITH & PRAYER

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We are blessed this weekend to receive beautiful readings that perfectly affirm God’s mercy for us. We see that throughout the history of salvation, our loving Father looks past our sin, forgives us, and welcomes us back into His grace.

We see this with the Israelites in the first reading, whom after being freed from slavery in Egypt, turn away from God and worship the idol they make of a golden calf. At Moses’ intercession, the Lord relents from punishing them. In the second reading, Saint Paul tells us of how forgiving the Lord was toward Him: “I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and arrogant, but I have been mercifully treated” (1 Timothy 1:13.) Finally, in the Gospel, our Lord Jesus Christ assures us that no matter how far we have gone from Him, He will come to greet us with an open and forgiving heart. “What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the  ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep’” (Luke 15:4-5.)

In the same way, God’s mercy and eager forgiveness extends to us today. So with a heart full of gratitude for these gifts we don’t deserve, we begin to prepare to make a pledge to God, to give back to Him a small portion of the many gifts He gives us. Next weekend is our “Discipleship of Faith and Prayer weekend,” in which we will pledge, before the altar, to give to God some of our time through prayer and through learning our faith. During Mass, we will all receive commitment cards with many forms of private and public prayer and ways of deepening our Catholic faith. We will then take a few moments to consider what the Lord may be calling us to - perhaps Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, some time meditating on the Scriptures, praying before meals, coming to Mass every Sunday, reading about the lives of the saints, or something else. If you already spent time doing these things, good! Then you surely have seen the graces that come from it, and can commit to doing just a little more each week. Once we select how we will spend our time with the Lord, we will sign our commitment cards and place them before the Lord.

I encourage you to take this seriously, and not to find time to pray and deepen your faith, but to make time, because time spent with God is time well-spent. To spend time in prayer is to spend time with our Creator, our Father, who is deeply and crazy in love with us. When we commit to spending time with Him, we commit to time to receive this love and the graces He longs to give us. Time spent with God is living peacefully in the present, not thinking regretfully about the past or anxiously about the future, but receiving the gift of the present moment with God.

Although we make this commitment out of gratitude for the Lord’s many blessings, it really is a gift to us, both personally and in community. When discipleship becomes a way of life, the parish becomes a praying welcoming, serving, giving, and celebrating community. The Lord wants to tear down the walls that divide us, He wants to make of us a true, loving, Christian community, united in Him, so that we are no longer just passersby at Queen of Peace, not just spectators, but members of a family of faith with an assurance of    belonging. This can happen at Queen of Peace. We saw it just two weekends ago, at Funfest - we embraced our diversity, offering our unique gifts to the community and had a wonderful celebration of God’s blessings. Let us continue allowing the Lord to work in us, to make us one family of faith, part of One Church, the One Body of Christ.

CON GRATITUD POR LA MISERICORDIA DE DIOS, PREPAREMOSNOS PARA EL DISCIPULADO DE FE Y ORACIÓN

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,

Tenemos la bendición este fin de semana de recibir bellas  lecturas que perfectamente afirman la misericordia de Dios hacia nosotros. Vemos como a lo largo de la historia de salvación, nuestro Padre amoroso ve más allá de nuestros pecados, nos perdona, y nos acoge de nuevo en Su gracia.

Lo vemos con los Israelitas en la primera lectura, quienes tras haber sido liberados de la esclavitud en Egipto, se alejan de Dios y alaban al ídolo que construyen, un becerro de oro. Tras la intercesión de Moisés, el Señor renuncia a castigarlos. En la segunda lectura, San Pablo nos habla sobre el perdón del Señor. “Antes fui blasfemo y perseguí a la Iglesia con violencia; pero Dios tuvo misericordia de mí” (1 T 1:13). Finalmente, en el Evangelio, nuestro Señor Jesucristo nos asegura que no importa cuánto nos hayamos alejado de Él, Él siempre vendrá a encontrarnos con un corazón abierto y lleno de perdón. "¿Quién de ustedes, si tiene cien ovejas y se le pierde una, no deja las noventa y nueve en el campo y va en busca de la que se le perdió hasta encontrarla? Y una vez que la encuentra, la carga sobre sus hombros, lleno de alegría, y al llegar a su casa, reúne a los amigos y vecinos y les dice: 'Alégrense conmigo, porque ya encontré la oveja que se me había perdido' (Lc 15: 1-32).  

De la misma manera, Dios nos extiende su misericordia y su anhelante perdón. Así que con un corazón lleno de gratitud por estos regalos que no merecemos, comenzamos a prepáranos para hacerle una promesa a Dios, de regresarle un poco de los regalos que Él nos da. El próximo fin de semana es nuestro fin de semana de Discipulado de Fe y Oración, en el que prometeremos, ante el altar, dedicarle tiempo a Dios por medio de la oración y de actividades que profundicen nuestra fe. Durante la Misa, recibiremos tarjetas de promesa con varias formas de oración y maneras de profundizar nuestra fe Católica. Entonces, nos tomaremos un momento para considerar a que nos está llamando el Señor – quizá a adorar al Santísimo Sacramento, meditar las Escrituras, a rezar antes de cada comida, a ir a Misa todos los domingos, a leer sobre las vidas de los santos, o algo más. Si ya hacen alguna de estas cosas, ¡muy bien! Entonces seguramente ya han recibido la gracia que estas les dan, y podrán comprometerse a hacer un poco más cada semana. Una vez que elijamos como dedicaremos tiempo al Señor, firmaremos nuestra promesa y la pondremos ante el Señor.

Los invito a que tomen esto en serio, y no a encontrar tiempo para el Señor, sino hacer tiempo para el Señor, porque el tiempo con el Señor es tiempo bien utilizado. El pasar tiempo con el Señor es pasar tiempo con nuestro Creador, nuestro Padre, quien está profundamente enamorado de nosotros. Cuando nos comprometemos a pasar tiempo con Él, nos comprometemos a un tiempo en el que recibimos su amor y la gracia que anhela darnos. El pasar tiempo con Dios es vivir pacíficamente en el presente, no pensando con remordimiento en el pasado, ni pensando con ansiedad en el futuro, sino recibir el regalo del momento presente con Dios.

Aunque hacemos esta promesa por gratitud por las tantas bendiciones del Señor, en realidad es un regalo para nosotros, individualmente y como comunidad. Cuando el discipulado se convierte en una manera de vida, la parroquia se convierte en una parroquia que ora, que sirve, que da, y que celebra. El Señor quiere romper los muros que nos dividen, y quiere hacer de nosotros una verdadera comunidad Cristiana que ama, unida en Él, para que no sólo vengamos de pasada en Reina de la Paz, para que no solo seamos espectadores, sino miembros de una familia de fe con una seguridad de pertenencia.  Esto verdaderamente puede pasar en Reina de la Paz. Lo vimos hace dos semanas, en Funfest – aceptamos nuestra diversidad, ofreciendo nuestros regalos únicos a la comunidad y tuvimos una maravillosa celebración de las bendiciones de Dios. Continuemos pues permitiendo que el Señor trabaje en nosotros, haciendo de nosotros una familia de fe, parte de Una Iglesia, del Cuerpo de Cristo.
