Epiphany

Dear brothers and sisters of Queen of Peace,

This weekend, we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. This is the great manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Savior of the entire world. Now, all the ends of the earth, the remotest peoples, the far away, and the unbelievers can recognize God's Mercy in the Child of Bethlehem, and start a way of conversion, an itinerary of faith following the Star, to adore and do homage to the true and only King of the universe.

This is the feast of the Light, which opens the way to the celebration of all the mysteries of the life of Christ. The gifts brought by the Magi signify the nature of this God-with-us: gold for a King, incense for a Priest, and myrrh for his burial. Therefore, the gift of the Epiphany is Christ Himself, manifested, appeared, revealed to all the nations as the true light which is worth following, serving, and adoring with all our lives, time, love, and faith.

In the magi, representatives of the pagan religions and of all humanity of every age and every condition, we can see the first-fruits of the announcement of the Gospel, the joyful proclamation of Jesus Christ, which has the power to change and bring to fulfillment the lives, customs, and sufferings of those who welcome this Good News of salvation. After many centuries of research and study, only in this Child, the lives of the Wise men acquired meaning and happiness. According to the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church of Vatican II, “Christ is the light of humanity” (No. 1), and the Church is the sacrament, the instrument, the visible sign of that light of Christ for all the nations.

Christianity is not something private, just as the light of Christ is not private: It serves others, it gives itself for others, it enlightens others’ lives. The Epiphany is the feast of the missionary Church which brings Christ’s salvation to the ends of the earth. Queen of Peace needs to become that Light, which dispels the darkness of sin, selfishness, violence, division, judgment, lies, lust, … so prevalent in our culture of death. Like the Magi, Baptism and the Eucharist have made of us people of the Light, who are bound to announce what we have seen and heard at the stable of Bethlehem during this Christmas Season. Our co-workers, our neighbors, our relatives, our spouses, our children, and we ourselves are longing to be invited and accompanied back to the simple but powerful beauty of our Catholic Faith. This is the reason behind our new parish center: we are building a center of faith that will draw thousands of people to Christ and His new life. Next weekend, we will all have the opportunity to participate in this mission, by attending one of the Listening Sessions we have planned. There will be one after every Mass. These sessions are opportunities for you to voice what you think our new home needs to bring people to Christ.

“And they departed for their country by another way” (Mt 2:12).

Queridos hermanos y hermanas de la Reina de la Paz,

Este fin de semana, celebramos la Solemnidad de la Epifanía del Señor. Esta es la gran manifestación de Jesús como Mesías de Israel, Hijo de Dios y Salvador del mundo entero. Ahora, todos los confines de la tierra, los pueblos más remotos, los lejanos y los incrédulos pueden reconocer la Misericordia de Dios en el Hijo de Belén, e iniciar un camino de conversión, un itinerario de fe siguiendo a la Estrella, para adorar y homenajear al verdadero y único Rey del universo.

Esta es la fiesta de la Luz, que abre el camino a la celebración de todos los misterios de la vida de Cristo. Los regalos traídos por los Magos significan la naturaleza de este Dios-con-nosotros: oro para un rey, incienso para un sacerdote, y mirra para su entierro. Por lo tanto, el regalo de la Epifanía es Cristo mismo, manifestado, aparecido, revelado a todas las naciones como la verdadera luz que vale la pena seguir, servir y adorar con todas nuestras vidas, tiempo, amor y fe.

En los magos, representantes de las religiones paganas y de toda la humanidad de todas las edades y condiciones, podemos ver los primeros frutos del anuncio del Evangelio, la proclamación gozosa de Jesucristo, que tiene el poder de cambiar y traer plenitud a las vidas, las costumbres y sufrimientos de aquellos que reciben esta Buena Nueva de salvación. Después de muchos siglos de investigación y estudio, sólo en este Niño, la vida de los Reyes Magos adquirió sentido y felicidad. Según la Constitución dogmática sobre la Iglesia del Vaticano II, "Cristo es la luz de la humanidad" (nº 1), y la Iglesia es el sacramento, el instrumento, el signo visible de esa luz de Cristo para todas las naciones.

El cristianismo no es algo privado, así como la luz de Cristo no es privada: sirve a los demás, da de sí mismo a los demás, ilumina la vida de los demás. La Epifanía es la fiesta de la Iglesia misionera que lleva la salvación de Cristo hasta los confines de la tierra. Reina de la Paz necesita convertirse en esa Luz, que disipa la oscuridad del pecado, el egoísmo, la violencia, la división, el juicio, la mentira, la lujuria ... tan frecuentes en nuestra cultura de la muerte. Como los Reyes Magos, el Bautismo y la Eucaristía han hecho de nosotros, gente de la Luz, quienes están obligados a anunciar lo que hemos visto y oído en el establo de Belén durante esta Navidad. Nuestros compañeros de trabajo, nuestros vecinos, nuestros parientes, nuestros cónyuges, nuestros hijos, y nosotros mismos anhelamos ser invitados y acompañados de nuevo a la belleza simple pero poderosa de nuestra fe católica. Esta es la razón detrás de nuestro nuevo centro parroquial: estamos construyendo un centro de fe que atraerá a miles de personas hacia Cristo y hacia Su nueva vida. El próximo fin de semana, todos tendremos la oportunidad de participar en esta misión, asistiendo a una de las Juntas que hemos planeado. Habrá una después de cada Misa. Estas sesiones son oportunidades para que expresen lo que piensan que nuestra nueva casa necesita para llevar a la gente a Cristo.

"Advertidos durante el sueño de que no volvieran a Herodes, regresaron a su tierra por otro camino" (Mt 2:12).
